General Motors has shown interest in acquiring Malaysian automaker Proton, according to Reuters reports citing Malaysia’s Second Finance Minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop. Proton is losing local market share and struggling in foreign markets against South Korean and Japanese automakers. GM could use Proton’s production facilities to build low-cost cars.

Malaysian automaker Proton Holdings will collapse unless it finds an international partner, according to the automaker’s founder, Mahathir Mohamad, who set up the company more than two decades ago. Earlier this year, Lotus officially announced its plans for a successor to its Esprit supercar. Today, the automaker announced it also is planning two other new models.
