General Motors will unveil the HUMMER H4 concept in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, according to sources close to the automaker. The H4 is rumored/expected to be a smaller truck to compete with the Jeep Wrangler. A production version of the H4 concept would likely arrive for the 2010 model year. It is unclear what platform GM would underpin the H4, but a source says it will not be a front-wheel drive platform.

In June, it was rumored that General Motors would dump the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and replace it with a HUMMER H4. Bob Lutz, GM product czar said that HUMMER needs to add two or three more products to its lineup. GM is developing an H3 SUT expected to launch in 2007. GM is also working on an H3 pickup for the 2009 model year, sources say.

General Motors will launch a “new HUMMER truck” sometime in 2009, according to HUMMER General Manager Martin Walsh. Currently, HUMMER has two models: the full-size H3 and the mid-size H2. HUMMER discontinued the large H1 earlier this year.

“The new product will have unparalleled off-road capabilities,” Walsh said. “Like our current HUMMER it would be recognizable from a distance.”

Earlier this year, GM product chief Bob Lutz said that HUMMER needs to add two or three more models. The 2009 model is expected to be one of those new offerings. At this time, we aren’t sure if “new HUMMER truck” means a traditional pickup (HUMMER H3T Concept shown) or another traditional body-on-frame SUV. Lutz said a HUMMER pickup truck is one of the projects being considered.

Walsh also said that the brand does not see an immediate future for a hybrid version of any HUMMER product, despite the possibility of another rise in gasoline prices. However, he did say that flex-fuel vehicles are part of the plan.

General Motors announced that HUMMER’s sales in North America during the first nine months of 2006 are up 53.5 percent from the same period in 2005. The sales gains are driven solely by the H3, the brand’s “smallest” SUV. As of September, sales of the H2 are down 31.9 percent to 12,562 units, while the H3 has sold 40,381 units, up 120.8 percent. It’s quite obvious that the H3 is carrying HUMMER.

“As people have discovered the H3 for themselves we’ve seen sales continue to trend upward,” explained Martin Walsh, HUMMER general manager. “We believe the vehicle’s attractive starting price of $29,995, its easy maneuverability and fuel economy comparable to other midsize utilities, is bringing new customers to the brand.”

While the H3 shouldn’t be considered a fuel economy champion (an EPA estimated 15/20 mpg is anything but), it is a much more responsible HUMMER than its big brother, the H2. As sales of truck-based SUVs continue to suffer, the H3 is a bright spot for HUMMER and General Motors, but you would have to be foolish to think that the H3 is immune to the same concerns. HUMMER has been rumored to be considering an even smaller, Jeep Wrangler size vehicle called the H4. Despite declining fuel prices, the shine will eventually wear off the “responsible” HUMMER, and the brand better have an even more responsible option ready by then.

General Motors has announced the launch of production on the HUMMER H3 in South Africa. General Motors say the production at the Struandale Assembly Facility in Port Elizabeth, South Africa is an important step for the global expansion of HUMMER by providing increased capacity and a global version of the H3 for markets outside North America.

HUMMER H3 vehicles built in South Africa will be exported to markets in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Production of a right-hand drive version will begin in the second quarter of 2007 for export into right-hand markets in Europe and Asia as well as for local sale in South Africa.

General Motors will shut down production at the AM General plant in Mishawaka, Indiana that builds the HUMMER H2. As sales of the massive SUV have slowed, inventory has built up on dealer lots so GM has decided that halting production will avoid adding to the over-supply.

Earlier this year, AM General transferred 170 workers from its H2 line to the Humvee plant and parts operation. That move was also due to slowing sales and production of the H2. The H2 plant employs about 600, which is down from a peak of about 1,000 a few years ago.

Well, last week Bob Lutz told us that HUMMER needed new models at a press conference during the Paris Motor Show. It didn’t take long for the first of the new models to appear in prototype form.

Spy photographers caught of prototype of a camouflaged HUMMER H3, while the disguise is designed to make the vehicle look like a typical SUV, but this longer H3 is no typical SUV. But look closely at the camouflage behind the B-pillar, and with the way disguise is sagging behind the B-pillar, it can only mean there is nothing but air back there. And that means there is a pickup bed hiding out back

Based on the images, this HUMMER H3 SUT is more than an H3 with a bed tacked on. The H3 SUT will have a longer wheelbase than the regular H3. With the longer wheelbase, the rear doors are no longer cut around the wheelwells and drop straight down to the frame rail.

Lutz hinted that HUMMER may be considering a dedicated truck and we’re hoping it is based on the H3T concept that was shown at the 2003 Los Angeles Auto Show.

General Motors needs to add several new models to its HUMMER lineup, according to Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, GM’s product czar. “HUMMER needs some more products. It needs two or three more products to give it sufficient market coverage,” Lutz told reporters at the opening of a HUMMER dealership in Paris.

Lutz said making a traditional pickup truck — with ample passenger seating, unlike the short-bed H2 SUT — remains an “option.” GM executives previously said a smaller HUMMER targeting the new Jeep Wrangler is a consideration. Back in June, rumors began that GM would dump the Chevy Trailblazer at the end of the decade and replace it with a new HUMMER model called the H4.

Despite reports that Schwarzenegger will be dumping his fleet of gas guzzling Hummers, following California’s suit against automarkers over pollution, the Governator is not in any way dumping his fleet of Hummers. A source close to the governor said that Al Gore might have said something about it. And despite the governor’s plans to sign a new greenhouse gasses bill next week, giving up the Hummers, which were so much part of his action hero movie profile, is still apparently out of the question.

Schwarzenegger still owns four Hummers plus a special hydrogen powered version that’s owned by GM. Back in 1992, he became the first private citizen to own a Hummer and since then he has helped introduce the brand to consumers. Many environmental groups have urged the Gov. to go hybrid.

CommonDreams.org is one of those groups and has urged the Governator to give up the Hummers and go hybrid. “Switching from a 10-mile-a-gallon behemoth to 50-mile-a-gallon hybrid would send a message to Californians — indeed all Americans — that ‘real men’ are gentle to Mother Earth,” the organization’s web site said last Earth Day.

On one final note on Schwarzenegger’s attitude towards Bill Lockyer and the lawsuit against the major car companies - the Governator is yet to read the suit and isn’t familiar with it.

General Motors just announced it is extending its warranty coverage up to 100,000 miles or five years, which makes it the best warranty of any full-line automaker. All 2007 model year cars and light-duty trucks in the United States and Canada will be offered with the new warranty. The new warranty will apply retroactively to 2007 GM cars and trucks already sold.

GM’s new 100,000 Mile Warranty is a fully transferable five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. GM will also extend its roadside assistance and courtesy transportation programs to match the powertrain warranty.

“We’ve been telling everyone how strong GM’s cars and trucks are in terms of value, design, quality and durability. Now we’re going to back it up,” Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner said. “This new warranty, combined with GM’s outstanding quality, competitive pricing, relevant technologies and a strong new lineup of cars and trucks, provides motorists with an unprecedented level of value and peace of mind.”

For non-powertrain components, GM’s Bumper-to-Bumper New Vehicle Limited Warranty remains as is: four years or 50,000 miles for Buicks, Cadillacs, Hummers and Saabs, and three years or 36,000 miles for Chevrolets, GMCs, Pontiacs and Saturns.

As part of Automotive News/AutoWeek’s run down of what’s the hopper for the automakers, today it is reporting that General Motors is considering another smaller HUMMER model. Expected for the 2009 model year, smaller HUMMER would be the size of the Jeep Wrangler and likely be called the H4. The only thing hanging it up is that the automaker needs to find a platform to underpin the new off-roader.

Automotive News’ crystal ball also says that we should expect a V8-powered H3 for 2007 and a crew-cab version for 2009. A new H2 based on the GMT-900 platform should arrive by 2010.
