The Chrysler Group announced yesterday that it is recalling over 145,000 Dodge Ram pickups to replace the passenger air bags. “The passenger air bag may not be compatible with a limited number of rear-facing child seat models if the passenger seat is in the full forward position and an airbag deployment occurs,” Chrysler said.

Audi announced it would recall 36,000 units of its full-size A8 sedan around the world because of a problem with the driver-side airbag. The driver-side bag may not fully deploy during a crash. While still providing some protection, they do not offer as much as planned.

U.S. highway fatalities hit a 15-year high in 2005, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration figures released on Tuesday. Despite a decrease of 3.9 percent in the number of passenger car fatalities, the total number of fatalities rose 1.4 percent over 2004, to 43,443.
