Mitsubishi Motors UK has confirmed that it will import the ‘i’ minicar — already available in Japan — for the U.K. market starting on July 1st.

Mitsubishi Motors UK only decided to import the after an extensive feasibility study. “We displayed the “i” at Badminton Horse Trials, the British Motor Show and at a number of key dealerships around the country and the public reaction was wholly positive. The “i” has already become a cult car in Japan and we’re confident that its space and sophistication, coupled with Mitsubishi’s reputation for quality and reliability, will also make it a hit in the UK,” said Jim Tyrrell, Managing Director of Mitsubishi Motors UK.

The i car is a compact four-seater with an aluminium spaceframe chassis and is powered by mid-engine,intercooled, turbocharged 600cc three-cylinder engine, producing 64 bhp mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. This power is enough to give a 0-50 mph time of 11.2 seconds and a top speed of around 90mph.

Just one version will be imported to the UK. Mitsubishi intends to market it as a premium small car. It will come standard with climate control, a six-speaker audio system with CD player, front and rear electric windows and electrically-operated folding door mirrors as standard. Mitsubishi Motors UK will only make 300 units available, with a price of £8,999 ($17,577 USD).
