BMW has been rumored to be working on its X6 crossover for years, but two years ago, it confirmed it would build a sportvan, based on the X5. The sportvan, possibly called the F5, is expected in 2009. Now word is that BMW is also working on a 3-Series sportvan, likely called the F3. While the F3 hasn’t yet received approval, it is expected to debut in 2010.

Both of these vehicles would be rear-wheel drive, five-door, five-passenger vehicles with available all-wheel drive, and would follow the European “people mover” design concept, and not the U.S. minivan design. As BMWs, the vehicles would have heavy emphasis on the “sport”, with ride and handling typical of the brand’s standards. Forget about the high step-in height of an SUV, these will much more practical vehicles, more carlike with seating positions only slightly higher than most passenger cars. The lower vehicle height would lower the vehicle’s center of gravity, which will help handling.
