Volkswagen CEO confirms plans for compact hybrids

Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn said the automaker is planning to build hybrid models of its compact cars, rejecting reports that he halted plans for hybrid versions of its smaller models. He said that hybrid technology should be used in all models of cars.
“There will definitely be compact hybrid models, such as Polo and Golf, and without any great delay,” said Winterkorn.
Volkswagen of America has been pushing for a Jetta Hybrid to compete with Japanese — and forthcoming domestic — hybrids, and this news has to come as some relief. It was reported that Volkswagen’s first gas-electric hybrid would by a Jetta that was expected to arrive in 2009.
Sources said that the hybrid system could be mated to either Volkswagen’s TFSI gasoline or recently announced Bluetec diesel engines. Plans are also still moving forward for a full hybrid version of the next-generation Touareg, which is due in 2010.
