Spy Shots: Mazda2

Spy photographers caught the third-generation Mazda2 during cold weather testing in Sweden. While it isn’t available in the States, the Mazda2 (aka Mazda Demio) has been a big seller in the B-class segment in European and Asian markets. Since Ford Motor is short on B-segement cars in the U.S. — it has a grand total of zero — there is speculation that the Mazda2 may find its way to these shores.

The styling of the third-generation Mazda2 is inspired by both hhe MX-Micro Sport Concept, shown at the 2004 Detroit Auto Show, and the Sassou Concept that debuted at 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The new Mazda2 is expected to launch in some markets late this year, and could reach the States in 2008. Mark Fields, Ford’s president of the Americas, has said that Ford would not have a U.S. B-segment car until 2009 or 2010 model years, but that doesn’t mean that Mazda isn’t going to get one sooner.
