The folks over at AutoGespot have acquired the best shots yet of the forthcoming Lotus Esprit. Until now all we have seen are shots of test mules disguised to look the previous model. Lotus’ new supercar is has been in development for years, but the car appears to finally be on track, as long as Proton’s problems don’t delay the car again.

Since high weight is the mortal enemy of Lotus, expect the next Esprit to be extremely light, perhaps light enough that a few dozen hamsters would provide acceptable motivation. But Lotus has a higher performance target than that — so the hamsters are out. Sources say that the Esprit will be powered by a BMW-sourced V8. However, with VW’s purchase of Proton, and thus Lotus, that could change.

Expect the flagship Lotus to cost around $125,000 and launch in 2010.
