When Ford debuted its Airstream Concept at the Detroit Auto Show, the automaker said that the concept’s unique HySeries hydrogen fuel-cell hybrid system had been installed in an Edge for on road use. And this week, the Ford Edge HySeries Drive was spotted in D.C. just before the city’s auto show. It is only fitting that the Edge HySeries debuts in D.C. as the vehicle was created with partial funding from the United States Department of Energy.

Ford’s HySeries Drive plug-in hydrogen fuel cell uses its fuel cell solely as generator to recharge the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery pack, instead of using it as the primary power source to drive the wheels. This allows the fuel cell to operate in a steady state, which means a smaller, less expensive fuel cell.
