During the press conference to unveil the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer, Mitsubishi announced that it is developing a new four-cylinder turbodiesel, which will be ready by the end of the decade. In 2010, the new engine will find its way into the new Lancer and the Outlander SUV.

The next-generation Mitsubishi turbodiesel will be based on the engine that Mitsubishi is developing with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for European models. The new engine incorporates a diesel particulate filter and NOx trap catalyst system to ensure compliance with U.S. Tier II Bin 5 emissions regulations. The U.S. Tier II Bin 5 regulation require NOx (nitrogen oxides) emissions to be as low as those from gasoline engines.

This advanced new Mitsubishi diesel will use a common-rail fuel injection system, with piezo injectors, and new variable-geometry / variable diffuser turbocharger to provide a wide range of boost control. A variable-geometry turbo design varies exhaust turbine flow, which minimizes “turbo lag.” The Mitsubishi turbo will also add a variable diffuser, which can vary flow from the compressor to the intake. The combination of these technologies can improve power and fuel efficiency.
