Lutz: Commodore coming to U.S. as Pontiac G8

Bob Lutz, General Motors’ product czar, unofficially confirmed that the Holden VE Commodore (shown) would be coming to the States as the Pontiac G8 at the Detroit Auto Show. At the Paris Motor Show back in September, Lutz said that everyone should “come to the Chicago Auto Show and all will be revealed.” Either Bob couldn’t wait any longer or he thought he was in Chicago.
“We are seriously planning to import a lot of Commodore SS sedans as Pontiac G8s,” he said. He added that Holden could export up to 50,000 Commodores annually if pricing was right. “We are yet to officially announce it,” said Lutz of the Commodore export deal. But he admitted bringing a V8 Commodore to the U.S. is a logical way to fill a void in Pontiac’s line-up.
The Holden Commodore and Pontiac G8 ride on GM’s new Zeta rear-wheel drive platform, which will also underpin the 2009 Chevrolet Camaro and the next-generation Chevy Impala.

[…] Earlier this week, we reported that Bob Lutz, General Motors’ product czar, unofficially confirmed that the automaker would bring a rebadged Holden VE Commodore to the States as the Pontiac G8. Lutz has said “all will be revealed” at the Chicago Auto Show in February. The G8 will share its sheet metal with the Commodore, but the grille and bumpers “will be unmistakably Pontiac.” GM expects to import 25,000 to 30,000 G8s from Australia annually. […]

Wagoner took Gibson into Pontiac’s design studio and uncovered the front end of the Pontiac G8 that will be unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show. The G8 is a rebadged version of the new Holden VE Commodore. As expected, the Pontiac G8 features a Pontiac-style grille, but is otherwise very similar to the Commodore. […]
