Following the news that Craig Breedlove sold his Spirit of America car to Steve Fossett. The Spirit of America recorded a top speed of 675 mph during a 1997 attempt on the world land speed record.

The land speed record is currently held by Andy Green in the Thrust SSC, with a speed of 763.035 mph, which is the first time a land vehicle has exceeded the speed of sound.
