Craig Breedlove says he has sold his latest Spirit of America car to Steve Fossett. Earlier this year, Fossett announced his goal to not just to break the current land speed record of 763 mph, but to be the first person to pass the 800 mph mark.

Five times during the 1960s, Breedlove broke the world’s land speed record in his Spirit of America cars. “I’m disappointed that I’m not going to be able to complete the project,” Breedlove said in an interview recently, “but I had to face reality. I’m going to be 70, and I was at that point in my life where I had to make a decision. Steve (Fossett) wanted to pursue the record.”

Breedlove ran the newest Spirit of America in 1997 in an attempt to break the sound barrier and regain the land speed record. But a damaged engine and damaged car put him “out of business” and the British Thrust SSC broke the sound barrier and set the world land speed record on October 15, 1997.
