When Peter Gilbert bought a new 1989 Saab 900 SPG (Special Performance Group), he couldn’t have imagined that he would still have the car 17 years later, and that it would have clocked up 1,001,385 miles. But 17 years, over a million miles, and eight deer collisions later, Gilbert still had the car before he donated the car to the Wisconsin Automotive Museum.

“When I hit 600,000 miles, it still wasn’t burning oil, so I knew it could go to a million,” said Gilbert.

Gilbert’s Saab past the milestone in September, and Saab officials were on hand to celebrate. Saab executives discussed putting it in their museum in Sweden. Gilbert hoped they would give him a new car, as a replacement, but he didn’t even get a T-shirt from Saab.

“There’s nothing more to prove,” he said about reaching a million miles on one car.

“Someone at Saab, however, thought this story still had legs, and convinced the company to reach out and reward any owner that has driven a million miles or more in his (or her) Saab with a brand new Saab. Gilbert automatically qualifies and will be receiving a brand new 2007 Saab 9-5 Aero early next year at the Saab Aero Academny at Road Atlanta, Georgia.”
