General Motors subsidiary Opel and Volkswgen are planning new crossovers for the 2009 model year, according to Automotive News. The new crossovers will likely be similar to the Mercedes R-Class, albeit at a much lower price.

Ford has announced that it is discontinuing its minivans, which will be replaced by several new crossovers, including the Edge and forthcoming Fairlane people-mover.

Just recently GM Vice Chairman and product guru Bob Lutz said that while GM has cancelled redesigning minivans for the 2009 model year, GM may not be getting out of the minivan business forever.

As part of the merging of the Opel and Saturn brands, the Opel crossover could come to the States as a Saturn.
