Volkswagen plans to sell its forthcoming Tiguan compact SUV with a 2.0L turbocharged “Clean TDI” diesel engine in all 50 states, probably as early as the end of 2007. The Tiguan won’t use the urea injection system to clean up oxides of nitrogen, instead will keep the emissions down with the use of a NOx catalytic storage converter, particulate filter, and other technologies.

This news means the Volkswagen Tiguan will be the only compact SUV available in the U.S. with a diesel engine. Jeep dropped the diesel option from its Liberty this year, and no other automakers have announced plans for a diesel.

Volkswagen will also offer the Tiguan with a gasoline engine. VW spokesman Steve Keyes said the gasoline model will arrive next fall, with the diesel following soon after. VW has not announced prices or technical specifications.
