Australians we get to see the new Camaro on the road before we see it in the States. Toward the end of the month, eagle-eyed Australians will get a sneak peak at the first prototypes of the production car.

Why Australia? GM’s Holden division developed the automaker’s new rear-wheel drive platform — formerly known as Zeta — on which the Camaro is based.

Denny Mooney, the boss of Holden, told Drive this week: “We are building prototype Camaros right now. We should see some on the roads before Christmas.”

When the Camaro finally reaches production it will be built in Canada, but we are expecting to see another import from Australia. Holden is expected to export its flagship Commodore SS-V sports sedan to the U.S. as the next-generation Pontiac Grand Prix. Holden won’t confirm if the deal has been approved, but Mooney has a “good feeling about it”. And at the Paris Motor Show, GM’s product czar, Bob Lutz hinted that everyone should “come to the Chicago Auto Show and all will be revealed.”
