Nanjing Automobile will celebrate its 60th birthday next year by building the first Chinese-built MG on March 27, 2007. Deputy chairman Lu Zhenxin announced Wednesday that Nanjing’s first MG will roll off the line on the company’s birthday.
The automaker is building a new factory in Nanjing that will be able to build 200,000 MG cars a year, with some vehicles being sent to the MG Rover plant in Longbridge in the U.K. for final assembly. Nanjing had planned to resume production in Longbridge on April 8, 2007, exactly two years after production ended, but may have to delay those plans
Lu was cautious whether Nanjing will have its U.S. plant in Oklahoma up and running by 2008 as planned.
“If the discussion with our partners goes smoothly and it is proper that we can start production in America in 2008, it can be an objective because we have support from the production bases in Nanjing and Longbridge. But we also have to consider the regulation issue, which will take some time,” he said.
