Fiat is interested in principle in forging a partnership with DaimlerChrysler to build new subcompact cars, one of which would likely be the Dodge Hornet concept, but only on certain conditions, CEO Sergio Marchionne said on Tuesday.

DCX is said to be looking for a production partner to develop and manufacture the Hornet subcompact for the global market, and Fiat is always on the lookout for such partnerships that reduce its need for development capital — such as its new Fiat 500 / Ford Ka project.

“We are interested in anybody that can offer us either a reduction in commitments to capital, so probably willing to share the burden with us (and) who in the process offers us additional exposure to markets that may be of interest to Fiat,” Marchionne told reporters after a presentation in Venice.

“So the answer is in principle yes, it meets all of the … requirements.”

The other companies thought to be potential partners for DaimlerChrysler have been Volkswagen, Mitsubishi, Hyundai and outsourcer Magna Steyr.

Wrong manufacture. Try China…new is coming soon

I would be surprised if Dodge went with Fiat. Just because Fiat would like to partner with other companies, doesn’t mean it will happen with DCX.

Expect it to be a Chinese manufacturer or for DCX to expand the relationship with VW.
