Nissan’s new incentive: Buy now, pay later

Today, Nissan launched a new incentive program with hopes of kick starting the automaker’s sales. The program allows customers to buy a car now and not make a payment for 130 days. The offer runs through October 2nd, and is good on all 2006 and 2007 Nissan models.

If you bought a Nissan today you wouldn’t make your first payment until January 2nd. If you buy on Oct. 2, when the offer ends, your first payment would be due on February 9th. Nissan’s “No Payments until 2007″ deal is not available in Michigan, Maine and Pennsylvania and officials didn’t say why those states were excluded.

While Toyota’s U.S. sales are up 10.1 percent and Honda’s are up 6.9 percent for the year, Nissan has been struggling to attract buyers, and demand is off 8 percent in the U.S. this year. One factor is Nissan’s product. While Toyota and Honda, have continued to launch new vehicles, Nissan has had a product drought without many new or redesigned models in the last 18-months.
