Replacement for Esprit to be named Lotus Esprit
August 4, 2006 9:44AM by Michael Savio
Back in May, Group Lotus officially announced that it would build a new mid-engined Lotus, which will be positioned at the higher end of the Lotus range, for the 2008 or 2009 model year. Lotus has not officially announced a name for the new sports car and has downplayed any rumors that the new vehicle would revive the Esprit nameplate.
However, Lotus boss Mike Kimberley said in a recent interview, “For Lotus to be successful we need a three model line-up and the jewel in the crown is the Esprit; it always was.” The interviewer noted that “the PR man cringed” and reminded Mr. Kimberley that what he meant to say was “the mid-engined sports car” as no decision has officially been made about the name yet.
It’s the first word from the company that the Esprit line — likely the most storied Lotus nameplate ever — would continue.
