Apparently, Alfa Romeo’s plans to return to the U.S. market will start with the launch of a halo car to boost U.S. interest in the brand before it introduces its mainstream models. According to AutoWeek, Alfa Romeo will debut its 8c Competizione coupe in the U.S. in late 2008, which will be followed by the 8c Spider in 2009.
The limited edition Alfa Romeo 8c will be based on a shortened Maserati Coupe and will be powered by the Maserati 4.2L V8. Alfa will sell the 8c through the 47 U.S. Maserati dealers. Alfa will only build 500 of each 8c Competizione model with half of each vehicle’s production destined for the U.S.
Alfa’s mass-market 159, Brera and Spider models likely won’t go on sale in the U.S. until 2010.
