According to AutoExpress UK, Subaru is taking a completely different tack for the next-generation Impreza. Subaru will replace the sedan with a stylish hatchback and target the Volkswagen GTI.

The all-new Impreza is scheduled to debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2007 and feature many of the things that make a Subaru a Subaru. While Subaru will not ignore the driving enthusiasts, that have traditionally been strong supporters of the brand, the company will task the Impreza with widening its appeal.

The new Impreza will maintain its boxer engines, in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged models producing up to 300-hp or more, and all models will retain the company’s signature four-wheel-drive layout. But Subaru will introduce its first four-cylinder boxer diesel engine soon after the Impreza arrives in 2008.

Styling of the new Impreza features cues seen on the B5-TPH Concept. The 2008 Impreza will be larger than the GTI and will offer vastly improved interior materials, which will be benchmarked against the Audi A3.

Overall, the new Impreza is going to be one more step in Subaru’s move upmarket.

Everyone wants to move upmarket - what size is that demographic? EVERYONE can’t be selling iron into the same smallish segment!

  2. Auto Insider News » Is this the 2008 Subaru Impreza? Says:

[…] While this is likely a Photoshop job, this is the best illustration we’ve seen so far of the next-generation Impreza. Rumors say the next Impreza will be based on the current Legacy platform but remain about the same size as the current Impreza. With the clearly longer wheelbase, and shorter rear overhang, this seems to be in step with those rumors. Of course, there have also been rumors of a hatch-only design, which this goes against. […]
