Infiniti dealers angered by GT-R branding

At the New York Auto Show, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn announced that the forthcoming GT-R would be sold under the Nissan brand in the U.S. rather than as an Infiniti, as many had believed. Ghosn said that every country except the United States wanted the next GT-R to be a Nissan. The U.S. unit couldn’t prove that branding it as an Infiniti would lead to better sales or profits.

“I was very neutral,” Ghosn said.

The announcement has incensed many Infiniti dealers, who “desperately wanted the GT-R as a halo for the brand.” Nissan North America’s executives favored selling the GT-R as an Infiniti in the U.S. and thought that Ghosn was likely to allow them to make the final decision.

Historically, branding the GT-R as a Nissan clearly makes sense but there is also an argument to made for the selling such an expensive car should be sold under the Infiniti brand.

The GT-R is expected to sell for at least $65,000, with a sales target of about 1,500 in the U.S.
