Headlamps that pivot to see around corners are nothing new with cars like the Tucker Torpedo and Citroen DS. But we hadn’t seen anything in a long time but adaptive illumination is coming back into the light. Lexus, VW and BMW have recently introduced new systems.

Now Ford is ready to show its version of ‘smart’ lighting. Ford will unveil an electronic system on a Lincoln concept at the North American International Auto Show next month. The Blue Oval system differs from the foreign competitors by not having any moving parts. Instead, the speed and steering-dependent system employs a set of side-firing LEDs rather than the traditional swiveling lens. The potential advantages of this system include fewer moving parts with less mechanical wear, more compact lighting systems and ease of manufacturing and repair.

Production vehicles with Ford’s lighting system could be lighting up roads in as little as 36 months.
